These apps are the best teaching apps I’ve found so far on iTunes®. I use them at school and during tutoring sessions. You’ll need to click on the buttons to open the links. Each link will take you to the iPad® or iPhone® download.

MATHS ROCKX – If you’re going to buy one maths app, make it this one. Kids love singing their times tables along to the tune of well known songs. This app is worth every single cent of the $15. We all know how critical times table recognition and recall is. I cannot recommend the iPad and iPhone apps enough.

TIMES TABLES QUIZ – This iPhone and iPad app is brilliant. I find that kids are more excited about times tables when technology is involved.

TEACHER RESCUE APP – The Teacher Rescue app is one of the first apps I actually paid for. I use it as a relief teacher and when on contract. It’s so helpful. I’d highly recommend it to every teacher, especially newbies. It’s a life saver! Download the iPhone only version here.

HOPSCOTCH (CODING) – I discovered these Learn to Code app and the Hopscotch for Schools App at Edutech. Be warned, it’s addictive. I spent hours and hours on Stick Ninja!Download the iPhone Learn to Code app here. Download the iPad Learn to Code app here and the Hopscotch for Schools app here.

JOLLY PHONICS – Used and loved by so many schools and students. These are well worth the upfront cost. I use mine all the time. Download the Jolly Phonics Letter SongsJolly Phonics Lessons and Jolly Phonics Letter SoundsJolly Phonics Letter SoundsJolly Phonics Songs and Jolly Phonics Lessons here. You’ll need to open the links to select which version you’re after.

FRACTION BASICS – The Fraction Basics apps are brilliant. The two versions allow you to use the app on both devices. Kids love apps and it helps to ‘hide’ learning at home. This is one I recommend to parents a lot.

5 DICE – An electronic dice game kids love. Download the iPhone and iPad versions.

DICE – No more dice rolling on tables during quiet time. I’m all for hands on activities. I love that these two iPhone and iPad apps provide a quiet option for fast finishers.

IDOCEO – iDoceo is brilliant. Think checklists, roll books, timetables, grades and planning. adduce has everything you need for planning in one handy app.

PIC COLLAGE -I love the  Pic Collage apps. Colour printing photos is expensive. Run them through the app and print from your iPad. I love how easy it is to print lots of pictures on a budget. iPhone and iPad versions available via the links.

DROPBOX – This one technically isn’t an educational app, but Dropbox app for your iPad and iPhone will become essential once you realise how easy it is to edit, save and upload/download while on the go. I use pages and sync everything together. I can create invoices on the run. I can’t live (business wise) without it.

SPELLING CITY – My school kids loved the Spelling City website. The iPhone and iPad apps look great too.

TEACHER KIT – Time management and activity management in one handy iPad and iPhone app.

Movies & the Curriculum

15139739_10154743198887269_862288922_n.jpg

I’m forever trying to keep up with student trends, as I’ve found kids are more excited about learning when it links to a movie or something they really like. I’ve put together a list of links of popular themes that will bring up loads of options which you can download. I’ve basically cut the search time down to half! This isn’t a very pretty blog post but it is well worth saving or subscribing to email updates so you’ll receive a notification whenever I add to the list. Alphabet and Handwriting Resources

I’ve found these alphabet and handwriting resources on Educents. It’s free to sign up and download heaps of things. They also hold mad sales which bring amazing products down to next to nothing. I’m having technology issues at the moment, so I can’t include any photos. They’ll open up with the hyperlinks though!

I love this super cute Spring Alphabet Match game from A Special Kind of Class. It’s a freebie too!

These Alphabet Picture Cards from Miss Rhonda’s Readers looks good. Perfect for matching capitals with lowercase letters and pictures.

These Alphabet Flashcards from Homeschool Complete look good for matching upper and lowercase letters.

Any class I’ve ever had have LOVED BINGO! Check out this little beauty for a fun, hands on lesson. Perfect for a fast finishers activity, Polka Dot Junction have nailed it.

If you’ve got a bit of cash to spend check this out. Just think about the hours you’ll save when you don’t have to make everything from scratch. It’d be worth the money!

These handwriting sheets from Educents are super cute and these Arctic Animal Handwriting Practice sheets from The Multi Taskin Mom are FREE and awesome! Perfect for printing and laminating for student use. I’ll be adding a set to my fast finishers basket.

Studenthandouts.com has a large range of resources which are ready to download and print.

This handy PDF from www.eastgreenwich.k12 looks fantastic and this GRADE 3 HANDWRITING WORKBOOK FROM McGRAW-HILL is full of useful tips and ideas.

Why not bookmark printablecursive.com while you’re at it.

Sound, Blends, Sight Word, Spelling and Number Games and Contract Activities

Running a small tutoring business, I’ve always got parents asking me for ideas on how they can help their child to learn the order of the alphabet, their letter sounds and blends, sight words, spelling words and numbers. All these ideas could be adapted to suit any of the learning needs mentioned above.

I’ve created this list which would also be perfect to use in a classroom as homework or a spelling program.

Squish The Bug

I saw this game while on placement. I believe the idea come from the Midow Magic 100 List Guide. It is NOT my idea and I don’t claim it to be. I let students try and read/say their word. If they get it right, they get to squish the bug with a thong or fly swat. I’ve also done clothes which they peg on a line and a bbq where they turn the meat over.

Magnetic Letters

I picked this little gem up on my local buy and sell page. I use it for a range of things from playing eye spy looking for letters or numbers to making words and times tables.

Repurposed Connect Four

My kids love making their spelling and sight words using Connect Four counters which are covered with sticky dots with letters on them. You can also buy Link Words which has the same idea behind it.

Word Dominos

So simple but yet effective. I picked up a set of blank business cards. It saves heaps of time cutting up paper and laminating. They last ages as they’re strong cardboard too.

Guess Who?

I saw this idea online ages ago. The kids love playing it during our tutoring sessions. I can change the paper as we need to. Works a treat and makes them think before they ask questions.

Magic Water Painting

Paint is great except for the mess. Water is perfect as the kids feel like they’re painting but don’t make a mess. I love this for learning sounds, numbers and words.

Get typing!

Dough Words

Make words out of dough or use an old pen to write the letters in the dough. So many possibilities.

Colouring In

My kids love colouring in. I get them to read the word, cover it, say it, spell it and then colour it in while saying each letter.

Popstick Letter Match

Matching up lowercase and uppercase letters. I made these using Kmart stickers and coloured popsticks. A permanent texta would do the same thing.

Letter Jumble

Today I wrote out a child’s spelling words down the left hand side of her page. On the right hand side, I wrote them out again but jumbled them up. She loved linking the jumbled and unjumbled words together. We used a whiteboard marker and placed the sheet inside a plastic sleeve which means she can use it again this week without me there.

Fortune Teller

We created a fortune teller and wrote sounds and numbers on the outside bits. The inside bits had her spelling words. When she landed on the word, she had to spell it out. We took turns at being the host and game contestant.
